Muammar Abu Meniar el-Gaddafi
Muammar Abu Meniar el-Gaddafiaka Colonel Gaddafi was born in the North African desert, south of Sirte, Libya on 7 June 1942. Gaddafi was the son of a poor Bedouin nomad. He graduated from the University of Libya and Libya's military academy and was a devout Muslim and ardent nationalist. He received further military training in Hellenic Military Academy in Athens, Greece and the United Kingdom. As a teenager, Gaddafi was an admirer of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and his Arab socialist and nationalist ideology.
He espoused his own form of Islamic socialism, and his foreign policy was anti-Western and anti-Israel. He is married to Sofija Farkas from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, who is his second wife. Gaddafi has seven sons and one daughter. He has also adopted two children, Hanna and Milad. Hanna was killed during the United States’ bombing campaign of Libya in 1986.
Colonel Gaddafi has been the leader of Libya since a coup in 1969. As a captain in the army, he led the 1969 coup that deposed King Idris. He led a bloodless coup toppling King Idris at the age of 27, and has since maintained tight control of his oil-rich country by clamping down on dissidents. The ongoing bloody uprising poses the most serious domestic challenge to his rule. Overthrew the monarchy of Libya in the so-called "Green Revolution" in 1969, establishing a socialist Arab state under his leadership. Gaddafi Wrote "The Green Book" which is Libya's constitution.
In 1970 he closed U.S. and British military bases and expelled Italians and Jews. He banned alcoholic beverages and gambling and in 1973 nationalized the oil industry. He made unsuccessful attempts to unify Libya with other countries. He narrowly escaped death in 1986 when U.S. planes bombed sites in Libya, including his own residence.
At the UN General Assembly in 2009, Gaddafi accused the body of being a terrorism group like al-Qaeda. His vision of a United States of Africa resulted in the foundation of the African Union. In September 2009, Gaddafi visited the US for the first time for his first appearance at the UN General Assembly.
